In a follow-up to Perry’s post (again) I wonder: why should one buy Delphi 2005 instead of Visual Studio for .NET? A manager sees:

Delphi 2005 Architect edition: $3000 (new user). Support is an optional product. Cheapest level includes only 3 incidents for 12 months (whatever comes first).

MSDN Universal: $2800 (new user) and that gives the user VS.NET Enterprise Architect, ALL Office applications (including previous versions for testing), LTU (albeit for development only) for all Windows OS-es, including pre-releases only available to subscribers, online support with a garantueed response of 2 days, 4 phone incidents)

If you or your company has a history with Delphi and you want to keep your existing codebase, I can see why Delphi 2005 is a logical step. If you’re choosing tools for a new project, I cannot see why one would not choose MSDN Universal.

Scoble has found a new way to lure visitors to his blog: Open Source software. Being a Microsoft Employee, Robert asks you not to tell this to anyone else. Of course we will not. Because WE already knew how great Open Source software can be. Welcome to the club, Scoble.

Microsoft has put together a special edition (I guess that’s how they came up with the name for it) of Visual Studio .NET Professional 2003. Not only does it include VS.NET Pro 2003, but also Windows 2003 Server (Standard Edition), SQL Server 2000 (Developer Edition) and the Visual Studio Tools for Microsoft Office. All for the upgrade price of US$549 or a full price of US$799. I guess that basically means that you get the Windows Server 2003, SQL Server 2000 and the Studio Tools for Office for free.

This is the link the Dutch Microsoft pages about this special edition.

Halo 2 is there. Unfortunately only on XBox. In the Netherlands, but I guess in other countries as well, Microsoft released a special Halo 2 pack: it’s the Crystal XBox (it’s transparant, hence its name), with 2 crystal controllers, Halo 2 and a two months trial subscription to XBox-live. All together for only €199,99. Click on the post-title to go to the Dutch site with details.

My goodness. Doesn’t everybody in the world knows Microsoft Office? Why in the world would Microsoft dedicate a website to giving people the Office experience? Okay, it’s a Dutch site, and perhaps Microsoft thinks Dutch people don’t know Office. Guess they did not do their homework very well. I can’t think of ONE single person in my family, friends and their friends or colleagues that does not know Microsoft Office.

Microsoft released version 3.0 of their installer. It is part of the SP2 for Windows XP, but it can be downloaded seperately for systems running on pristine XP or SP1, or other versions of Windows (2000 and 2003). Get it here.

I use Mailwasher Pro (from Firetrust) as an anti-spam tool. After the trial, I decided to buy it, since it tagged the proper messages as spam, and left the rest untouched.

Nick Bolton sends an email message to you, whenever there is news from Firetrust. I don’t get spam that much, but everytime Nick announces something, I also get a lot of scam/spam messages. What is that? Is this guy selling his client-list to spammers?

I’m thinking of switching to an all-in-one solution: Norton Internet Security 2005. It is anti-virus, anti-spam, and firewall in one product. And it integrates with Microsoft Outlook (instead of running it after the checks are done).

SP2 for Microsoft Windows XP is finally done and ready for you to download. It took some beta’s, leaks and other non-legitemate versions, but finally everybody can enjoy it 😉

SP2 (just like SP1) takes space on your harddisk. If you don’t like that, and you was planning to reinstall your Windows anyway, why not use AutoStreamer to create an ISO for you that already has SP2 (or SP1)? All you need is the original Windows CD, the downloaded SP2 and SlipStream does the rest.
You can also choose to do the integration “manually”.

Download the full SP2 here or turn on Auto-Update on your machine to automagically download the update(s).

If you draw diagrams on a regular basis, chances are that you already own a softwareprogram that helps you with that. But if you have to draw diagrams only on a very irregulare basis, Microsoft’s Visio might be a bit expensive. Consider using Dia, a gtk+ based diagrammers tool. It’s free, and there is a Windows version as well.
