Can somebody please explain to me what Oracle Developer Suite 10g and GameUtil (a RadeOn videocard tweaker) have in common, because I am lost. As long as I have gameutil running (check via Taskmanager), I can not start any tool from the Developer Suite (only sqlplus commandline). When I kill GameUtil, everything works like a charm. Huh?! Starting GameUtil again, and the tools don’t start anymore.

Recently Oracle renamed their HTMLDB product/framework to Application Express. When you install Oracle Express Edition, and you navigate to the management-page, you will see in the bottom-right corner that it’s build with….Application Express. Nice to see they’re eating their own dogfood.
Wow! Almost production ready! Oracle released beta 3 (or pre-production) of the Express Edition of 10g for Windows. It supports more languages than beta 2 because it’s a Universal Release.
You have to uninstall the previous beta, which will also delete your database, so export your data first. Get the 215MByte download here.
Borland has decided to sell its flagship Borland Developer Studio (Delphi, C++ Builder and C# Builder) and JBuilder to concentrate resources on their Application Lifecycle Management (ALM). See this article on Computer Weekly, their press-release, or numerous weblog entries on the Borland site.
When Microsoft lowered its prices for Visual Studio, and other companies like Oracle and IBM are giving away IDE’s, whilst Borland only increased their prices, I knew something was going to happen. Now we all know what it is.
I just installed Sun Solaris 10 in VMware (5.5). This new version of VMware does not seem to like my Kerio Personal Firewall (now Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall): disabling the firewall lets me connect to the internet. Older versions of VMware had no problems with Kerio whatsoever.
Friday I signed my contract with Transfer Consulting, part of the Transfer Group. My focus will change back from DBA/system-administration to development. Yeah. Oracle development, so the focus will be on Java. You might have noticed my writings were more about Java lately. Now you know why!
Because it has been some time I did some development in Oracle(tools), I will follow some courses first. But they are done in-house, since Transfer has its own education division. That’s how they started 10 years ago: some Oracle teachers started an independent education company.
I will start my new job February 13th, so this week I will be “between jobs”.

Microsoft released SQL Server 2005 Express, Oracle released Oracle Express Edition (XE) and now IBM is releasing DB2 Express-C for free. IBM knows it has to give us more than the competition, so their free version will use a second processor and there are no disk-usage limits. The only limit is the 4GB memory usage (Microsoft and Oracle will only use 1GByte). Oracle XE is still in beta, so I guess IBM’s move will have to trigger some changes?
