I just finished installing an old (U2W) SCSI disk in the server. It was a remainder of the old Linux server, too good to leave unused. It’s only 9.1GB, but fast ones!

I also installed Smarty on the server. Being a (PHP-) template engine, it can be used to build just about anything. I’ll expirement with it, and let you know if it is of any use. The company’s website still needs to be build, so perhaps this is the time to do so. Templates are fun and simple, so it should not be a problem.

After the server crash last year, I hadn’t had the time to setup an online photo album softwarepackage. But I did last week, and it’s got some pictures already.

Comments and ratings are always welcome. If you like me to host your pictures, please do not hesitate to contact me. The software (CopperMine) is template driven, so it can be change in look-and-feel to whatever you like. Commercial use of the galleries is not implemented yet, but if you like to, do contact me, then we can work something out.

View the mainpage of the gallery here: http://www.rare-it.com/cm.

After being known for about 9 months, Microsoft is finally trying to do something about the security-hole in ActiveX, for IIS 5.0 users known as Download.Ject.

The change means that ActiveX will not be allowed to write to the system’s disk. Wasn’t that one of the things that developers did NOT like about first versions of Java?

Ever since a friend of mine had lent my Microdrive for his holiday, my camera counter was screwed up. It was set to an incorrect number, so I resetted the camera to start with 0 again. Every since, I renumbered the pictures on the PC.
I can’t remember who told me this procedure, but somebody told me: why don’t you put a picture on the memorycard with a correct number, then take a picture and see what the resulting filename will be. I can’t see any reason why I haven’t tried this very simple solution before, but it works. No more renaming files!

My S2 Pro counter has surpassed the 5000 mark. End of this month, I will have this camera for two years. My goodness, that’s a lot of pictures. You can see some pictures (albums will be filled slowly) here.

Yesterday I watched The Life of David Gale on DVD. We had heard about it, and we remembered that it was rated rather high. But we could not remember ever seeing it in the cinemas here, but hey, memory is volatile, so perhaps that was just a glitch.

I you even remotely like drama, or the thriller-genre, or a good detective-story, then this movie is a must. No, let me rephrase that. I you like movies, this one is a must. No no, not right. Rephrase. This movie is must. There.

Tom has an (again) excellent article about a very affordable NAS-solution. It plugs right into you controller and in about 5 minutes you have yourself a NAS.

The system is based on Open-E’s license-free NAS operating system, and comes in an Enterprise (NAS Enterprise), a normal (NAS 2.0) and in a small (in features) version (NAS SOHO). With prices ranging from approx. 200 euro to about 600 euro, the solution is much more cost-effective than a real NAS, since you would have to buy an extra disc for the operating system, the operating system itself and perhaps some client licenses as well! The concept of Open-E’s NAS is to buy the hardware, and you’re done buying.

The Mono-project released version 1.0 and is therefore no longer in beta. Their site is pretty busy right now, but don’t forget to check it out.

For Free! Visual Studio 2005 beta 1 is available to MSDN subscribers (at a later stage to non-subscribers as well) for immediate download and the lite versions (Microsoft decided to call them “Express”, like Outlook Express) of Visual Basic, C++, C#, J#, Webdev and SQL are available to everyone.

The Express versions are light-weight, easy-to-install products, targetted at hobbyists, enthusiasts and novices to enable them to expand their knowledge or just to create dynamic (web)applications without losing an arm and a leg.

Wow! I must say my perception of the whole Microsoft domination changed when they introduced .NET, but lately I think that one should wonder why NOT go with Microsoft?

Everybody in the gaming world long enough knows about it: SLI. Or…Scan Line Interleave. A technique found in 3Dfx graphics card. By combining two cards (then there was no AGP, just PCI) and connecting them, card 1 could render the even scanlines and card two could render the odd scanlines, and combined it would create the whole image. At higher framerates, or at higher resolutions.

NVidia reintroduces SLI with its PCI-Express based GeForce 6800. Tom has an extensive article about it, and things are looking good. NVidia has lost some ground when ATI started making very competitive cards again, but I guess they’re going to reclaim some land!

If you bought Windows 2003, but you want to use it as the good-old Windows 2000 Workstation or Windows XP Pro, then you can now. Follow the instructions on this page, and you should be good to go!

Thanks Perry, for the tip.
